I would appreciate the help very much, Master Ignis. There's simply so much I don't understand here that I don't even know where to begin! It's all so overwhelming different. I'm sure a lot of it is very useful but...
[How does one begin to figure out the appliances in their home or flying carriages and ship when they didn't even know such things were even possible to begin with?]
I'd thought that many things harnessed the aid of spirits in order to function but some of the tasks seem awfully tedious and repetitive work to ask of a spirit. I haven't noticed anything to suggest their presence yet anyway so I'm at a loss.
[When he says his world is different, Huaisang isn't joking.]
I don't know how what I see is even possible, much less how any of it works or even what some of it is used for. Some of it is even very frightening like those booths. I saw someone going into one and just vanish! If it's not the work of a spirit or some other entity, what could it possibly be?
[And then Huaisang seems to realize that he's starting to vent and looks a bit embarassed at himself, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.]
Ah... I'm sorry, Master Ignis. I didn't mean to dump all of that on you so suddenly.
There's no need for apologies. And just Ignis is fine.
[ ignis says gently; huaisang is an incredibly polite man, but ignis finds himself liking him enough to gently urge him to dispense with formalities. after all, they're pretty much all trapped in this place together.
he's digesting the other man's tale about spirit aides and sensing them, and it's clear that his world is something strikingly mystical -- although it takes him a moment to realise that he's talking about the elevator. although did that mean that he'd pretty much climbed all the way up those flights of stairs? he blinks. ]
Those booths... You mean that one over there? [ he gestures to the elevator at the far end of the corridor, almost hidden away at the side. ]
[The gentle approach is certainly the way to go with him, given Huaisang's general state of low-key distress about this place and all its peculiarities.]
I saw people go in that one, too, but when the doors opened again, they were gone! The other ones are outside, on the streets. I can't explain them at all and didn't want to go near them in case they're haunted. It's too scary!
[Huaisang shivers dramatically, edging just a little bit closer as he casts a nervous glance back toward the people-eating doors down the hall.]
The stairs were even worse than the ones at Golden Carp Tower! I was so tired after climbing just one of them! It was so terrible. I had to take a nap after I got to my room...
I agree that would be less overwhelming. We still do not know just what this place will have in store or a sense of what obstacles may arise. For now, the wisest course of action may be to simply observe the situation and reconvene once information has been gathered.
[Information dumps such as the ones the GemSci researchers have given him tend not to be so easy for him to absorb. It's one reason why Huaisang had struggled so much in his studies back at the Cloud Recesses. That and it was just hard to focus on boring lectures when the sun was shining or there was a pretty bird sitting outside in a tree. He's done far better with more hands on approaches or information being broken down into smaller portions to review and analyze, at least, when he's had motivation to learn the subject.]
As for Wei Wuxian, individual desires should come secondary to finding and securing a way home. I feel that it is more important that we return to our sects with haste.
[It'd been a harsh lesson Huaisang had needed to learn himself, that sometimes what he wants simply doesn't matter compared to what has to be done. Of course, he isn't bound by strong personal ties to anyone anymore since his brother died and his friendships decayed into ruin over the years. It's easy for him to let go of those he's emotionally distant from or lacks strong connections with.
He's not heartless though, just coldly pragmatic sometimes. And at present, short on resources such as manpower and the energy to devote to extraneous pursuits.]
However, if he or your people wish to pursue other leads, I wish you luck with that. If I come across any information to that effect, I'll pass it along.
[ It's just like Nie Huaisang to sit back and watch things unfold. But the fact that he's willing to admit all these plans, that's something. It's certainly none of his "I don't know" playacting.
That also means they're on the same page. It's not the same page that his Wei Ying is on; his Wei Ying doesn't know about Nie Huaisang's role in everything. He will need to find time to explain that. ]
I will speak to Wei Ying.
We should work towards one goal.
[ They don't need any more sect infighting. It would be better for all of them to be able to rely on each other and work as a team. It's a miracle they have other people they can trust at all.
Usually? He'd like to work small. He'd like to have just Wei Ying, and his brother. But he's seen what these worlds can do to someone, and they're at a significant disadvantage, having none of the power, influence or money from home. ]
[Revealing this much of his true self is something, indeed. It's a gesture of good faith on Nie Huaisang's part, or at least as much of one as he can muster. He's grown up to be a cautious man and somewhat bearish in his personal affairs, given that it's a trait that goes against the carefree nature he'd had prior to the ruin Jin Guangyao had brought into his life.]
Then we are in agreement. It would be prudent to put aside what differences we can and combine our efforts in one direction. However, I should warn you that I have not worked with others in quite some time.
[Not since Mo Xuanyu, honestly, and everyone knows how well that turned out. The closest Huaisang has come to teamwork outside his sect has been maneuvering others like pieces on a gameboard.]
At least, not in a traditional sense.
[Though after the conclusion of his last match, he's about as open to learning alternate ways of doing things as he'll ever be.]
First, we'll need to gather information and obtain as much mastery over it as we can muster. It would be unwise to progress without adequate intelligence.
[ He's familiar enough with how Nie Huaisang operates, if not personally witnessing his plans then at least seeing the result of them.
But the thing about this place, is that Lan Wangji used to have a chessboard, and he preferred to let the pieces choose their own way. Nie Huaisang moved all his pieces with an invisible hand. Yes, that nature, once molded, is hard to break.
But neither of them have any access, here. Here? They are both pawns, at best. ]
They are unlikely to be truthful.
[ Or forthcoming. He thinks that getting adequate information is going to be... a lot more difficult to do than plan. ]
That was kind of what Huaisang had just said but maybe he wasn't clear. He shrugs.
"I'm not saying they're wrong to be suspicious. I'm simply saying that it's premature for us newcomers to worry about their intentions just yet. It might create unnecessary tension."
A pause.
"They could have just thrown us back in the wasteland and leave us to die instead of taking us on board. Instead, they've given us food and shelter. I think that implies that we're needed for something if they're willing to dispense with their resources to this degree."
